Piano Concerto No. 5 is dedicated to Carol Stone. Carol and I have been close friends for over 30 years, and she was one of the first teachers to participate in the Piano Olympics program. Carol is a wonderful piano teacher, who has nurtured generations of young pianists in Kingsport, Tennessee.
This concerto was inspired by Carol Stone’s stories and feelings surrounding the passing of her mother. Carol is a vivacious and joyous person, who displays her kind and caring nature to her piano students. The upbeat spirit of the 2nd movement’s E Major theme captures her personality and kind soul. The 1st movement reflects on Carol’s love for her mother and the emotions she begins to feel as she realizes her mother’s imminent passing.
Piano Concerto No. 5 expresses the love between children and their parents, and how difficult it is to say goodbye. This work has been influenced by the music of Czech, French and Russian composers.
