The concerto for Alto Saxophone and orchestra derived from Alexander Peskanov Piano Concerto No. 3 “Maryland Concerto.” It was arranged for a very young saxophonist in mind, to highlight its technical and expressive qualities.
The idea came during the concert while I was listening to several Peskanov piano concertos, including Maryland Concerto. It was performed by one of my very young saxophone student. I began imagining being able to do something similar for young saxophone students and enriching the repertoire for our young aspiring saxophone players.
Maryland Concerto seemed to be suitable for this purpose, combining expressive melodic lines and engaging and somewhat provocative rhythms, reminiscent of jazz, which fully identify with the character of the saxophone.
